Partial eclipse in the rest of Spain

How much of the Sun the Moon covers at maximum.

Good to know

Totality arrives mid-morning, between 10:44 and 10:52. The Sun will be high, about 40° above the horizon, so you can see it from almost anywhere without tall buildings in the way.

The closer to the centre line, the longer the darkness. In Tarifa, Algeciras, and La Línea de la Concepción it lasts more than 4 minutes. In Málaga city it is only 1 min 51 s, because the city sits near the northern edge of the path.

August is peak season on the coast, so hotels and roads will be very busy. Book early and get to your viewing spot in good time, ideally the day before.

Everywhere in Spain you need eclipse glasses meeting ISO 12312-2. You can take them off only inside the path and only during total darkness.

How to watch the eclipse safely

  1. Only look at the Sun through eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard. Ordinary sunglasses do not protect your eyes.
  2. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need a solar filter on the front of the lens. Never look through them while wearing eclipse glasses, the focused light burns through.
  3. You can look without protection only during totality, when the Moon hides the whole Sun. As soon as the first bright point of the Sun returns, put your glasses back on.
