Australia air quality map today

Each dot shows how clean the air is right now in that city: we compare PM2.5, PM10 and nitrogen dioxide with WHO guidelines. Next to the map you can see where the air in Australia is worst at the moment, and below it every city with a 48-hour forecast. The map includes Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth, among others.

FAQ

Where is the air worst in Australia right now?

The ranking next to the map answers that. For each city on the map we take the average PM2.5, PM10 and nitrogen dioxide forecast for the next 24 hours and compare it with World Health Organization guidelines. The places with the biggest excess are at the top. The ranking updates together with the forecast.

Is there smog in Australia today?

Look at the colour of the dots: green means air within WHO guidelines, yellow up to twice the guideline, orange up to four times and red more than that. The counter above the map shows what share of cities has good air right now.

Where does the data come from and how accurate is it?

From NASA's GEOS-CF model (Global Modeling and Assimilation Office), which combines a weather forecast, pollution emissions and satellite data. The model calculates values for squares of about 25 km, so it shows the background level for a city, not a reading from a particular street. We refresh the forecast once a day.

How do I check the forecast for one city?

Click a dot on the map or a city name in the list. Each city page has a PM2.5 forecast every 3 hours for 48 hours and current PM10, NO₂ and ozone values.
